After dropping my son off for a Boy Scout event at the Schoepe Scout Reservation at Lost Valley I stuck around and bagged a few SOTA peaks just off the PCT. I did this in mid May so I had the opportunity to chat with lots of folks working their way north on the PCT. The trailhead is right by “Mike’s Place,” a well known stop for through hikers to rest and get water.

Combs Peak is a straight forward hike on the PCT then a use trail up to the summit. No real 2-meter activity, though I did manage one contact just off the boarder in Otay Mesa at 59/59. Since it was early and a shorter antenna was easier to set up I used 20M. Found the peak register but it was soaked and no longer usable.

I continue to struggle with these small portable CW keys. Occasionally I get stuck on characters and hope the chaser knows what I mean. Something to work on as a CW newbie.

Thank you to all the chasers who helped to make this a successful activation.
