W6/CT-013

W6/CT-013, Keller Peak is a very popular drive up SOTA summit for activation. Here are details on how to hike it.

You can find plenty of activation reports that will give you all the info you need on Keller Peak including how to drive right up to the top. Since we are training for an upcoming Mt. Whitney trip we wanted to find a way to hike Keller Peak.

We were able to make a nice ~12 mile round trip hike by parking right after the turn onto Keller Peak Rd. The last 1.75 miles to the top is still on the road but the bottom portion is an enjoyable hike through an area called The Children’s Forest. If you are looking to stretch your legs while tackling Keller Peak this is a great way to do it. See GPX and KML files for details.

Quick note on 2-meter activation: This was a 2-meter only activation for us since the main purpose was a Boy Scout training hike. Please know that there is a good deal of RF on Keller Peak with competing antennas and repeaters. Know how to attenuate your 2-meter setup and be prepared to move around the summit to find a a good spot to hear the chasers calling you if you plan on only using 2-meters.

Thanks to our chasers:
